Our vision for the future is based on the idea that transforming financial lives starts by giving our people the freedom to transform their own. We have a flexible work environment, and fluid career paths. We not only encourage but celebrate internal mobility. We also recognize the importance of purpose, well-being, and work-life balance. Within Empower and our communities, we work hard to create a welcoming and inclusive environment, and our associates dedicate thousands of hours to volunteering for causes that matter most to them.

Chart your own path and grow your career while helping more customers achieve financial freedom. Empower Yourself.

Empower's Scheduling team powers the platform that welcomes new prospects, transitions them into valued clients, and sustains close relationships between clients and their personal advisors through well-timed calls and meetings. As a Senior Engineer for Automation Quality, you'll drive day-to-day quality execution across a mission-critical set of microservices and customer-facing workflows. You'll build and extend automation frameworks in Java and TypeScript, contribute high-signal Gherkin/Cucumber behavior-driven coverage, and partner closely with engineers, Product, and SRE to reduce risk and improve release confidence. You will also perform occasional manual and exploratory testing to validate edge cases and de-risk high-impact launches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver automation for critical scheduling workflows: create and maintain reliable automated tests across API, contract, component, and end-to-end paths.

  • Expand and improve automation frameworks in Java and TypeScript using Selenium Web Driver and Cucumber; raise test readability, stability, and reuse.

  • Contribute to quality strategy for your squad: help define the test pyramid, quality gates, and practical definitions of done; surface risks early with clear trade-offs.

  • Make accessibility part of everyday engineering: implement WCAG 2.2 AA acceptance criteria in test plans; add automated a11y checks (axe-core, Lighthouse) and support manual keyboard/screen-reader validation (NVDA/Voice Over).

  • Build robust test data strategies: design repeatable seeding, isolation, and environment setup practices that keep suites deterministic and reduce flakiness.

  • Improve CI/CD reliability: help optimize suite runtime via parallelization, stabilize flaky tests, and ensure artifacts (screenshots, videos, logs) are captured for fast debugging.

  • Partner on non-functional quality: contribute performance/load checks (JMeter or k6), basic resiliency validations, and monitoring/synthetic checks where applicable.

  • Manual and exploratory testing when needed: write charters, validate complex scenarios, reproduce tricky issues, and support UAT/bug bashes for major launches.

  • Influence through example: participate in test design reviews, pair with engineers, document patterns/anti-patterns, and advocate for pragmatic quality improvements.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 5-8+ years in software quality and test automation for distributed systems (microservices, event-driven systems, APIs), with demonstrated ownership of significant automation areas.

  • Languages & frameworks: Strong Java and/or TypeScript proficiency; hands-on experience with Gherkin/Cucumber and Selenium Web Driver.

  • API & contract testing: Experience testing REST/JSON services; familiarity with mocks/stubs, service virtualization, and contract testing (Pact or equivalent).

  • Accessibility: Working knowledge of WCAG and practical experience using automated a11y tools (axe-core, Lighthouse); familiarity with manual keyboard and screen-reader testing (NVDA and/or Voice Over).

  • Test design and diagnosis: Strong fundamentals (boundary/state-based testing, data-driven testing, and results analysis); proven ability to debug flaky failures across UI, API, and environment layers.

  • Environments: Comfortable working across local, staging, and CI environments; familiarity with Kubernetes-based deployments or ephemeral environments is a plus.

  • Communication: Clear, actionable defect reporting and technical writing; ability to align with engineers and stakeholders on scope, risk, and release readiness.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Resilience testing, trace-driven testing, synthetic monitoring, or chaos-style validation approaches.

  • Experience with Microsoft ecosystem and CRM integrations (Microsoft Graph API, Microsoft Bookings, Microsoft RBAC, Salesforce).

  • Background in financial services or other regulated industries.

  • Passion for a11y advocacy and collaboration with Design/UX to embed inclusive component and workflow patterns.
