Summary
Duke Energy is seeking an Electrical or I&C Engineer within the Design Support Engineering team at the Engineer I or II level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. The candidate will support the Oconee Nuclear Station, located in Seneca, South Carolina, which is within the Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet. The Oconee Design Support, Electrical and I&C team manages the development, design, and implementation of limited scope plant modifications to Oconee Nuclear Station. The team also supports operations and maintenance questions and troubleshooting on electrical and I&C component issues. The team may lead or support the site response to external and internal inspections and audits.
- For plant modifications, the individual will be responsible for developing the scope, technical basis, installation, and testing requirements for plant modifications installed in the plant. Ongoing support of assigned engineering changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities is required.
- For other activities, the individual will be responsible for researching and developing technical responses to questions or requests.
- The incumbent will work at the site, within the station's technical team and provide direct support to plant operations and maintenance, primarily in the form of design changes, engineering calculations, and technical support for plant electrical and/or I&C systems and components.
- Technical topics for work activities could include plant electrical and instrumentation systems, plant control systems, computer software systems, digital systems, security systems, and cyber security.
Responsibilities
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on department results.
- Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to specify the design, operation, and maintenance of system/components with moderate impact on existing systems.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

Basic/Required Qualifications
Nuclear Engineer I
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
- 0-2 years of engineering experience
Nuclear Engineer II
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- A master’s degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
- 2-4 Years of engineering experience
- Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience (see specific requirements)
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Proficient in the engineering theories and principles of electrical power systems, instrumentation & control systems, and/or digital process systems.
- Proficient in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Experience with general computer skills including Windows, e-mail, and Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and engineering products (e.g., Mathcad, AutoCAD, ETAP).
- Proficient in principles of project management.
- Ability to interact with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
Specific Requirements
- In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designed qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
- Ability to achieve nuclear plant Unescorted Access.
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
Working Conditions
- Typical office environment with flexibility to support plant operations. Must be able to work safely in an industrial environment, wear PPE (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc).
- Occasional work during nights and weekends or extended workdays may be necessary to support audits or inspections, unit outages, or emergent equipment issues, etc.
- Hybrid work schedule is allowed after completion of initial program qualifications.
