The Vice President (VP) of Merchandising – Basics will lead the strategy, execution, and growth of Dollar Tree’s consumables categories. This leader will define and execute a customer-focused merchandise strategy that drives sales, improves margin, strengthens supplier relationships, and enhances value perception within Dollar Tree’s core $1.25 price point and multi-price formats.
As a key member of the Merchandising leadership team, this role partners cross-functionally with Finance, Supply Chain, Store Operations, Marketing, and Global Sourcing to deliver profitable growth and operational excellence across the Basics portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Set and communicate the long-term strategy for all Basics categories, aligned with Dollar Tree’s mission and value proposition.
- Partner across merchandising in the development of annual and multi-year merchandise and category strategies, including product mix, pricing, and promotional planning.
- Identify category growth opportunities through customer insights, market data, and trend analysis.
Financial & Business Performance
- Own full P&L accountability for the Basics division, including sales, margin, inventory, shrink, and vendor funding.
- Drive financial discipline through cost negotiation, assortment productivity, and space optimization.
- Manage pricing architecture to balance value, profitability, and competitive positioning.
Assortment & Vendor Management
- Oversee assortment planning and category management to ensure balance across core, seasonal, and innovation items.
- Lead vendor partnerships and negotiations to secure optimal terms, funding, and supply reliability.
- Expand and evolve Dollar Tree’s private brand portfolio to deliver differentiation and improved margins.
Operational & Cross-Functional Excellence
- Partner with Supply Chain, Global Sourcing, and Operations to optimize flow, packaging, and logistics for high-velocity Basics goods.
- Collaborate with Store Operations and Visual Merchandising to ensure execution excellence at shelf.
- Align closely with Marketing on promotional strategy and storytelling to drive customer engagement and traffic.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of category and merchant leaders.
- Build a strong culture of accountability, innovation, and collaboration.
- Establish clear objectives and success metrics tied to enterprise and category goals.
Innovation & Market Insights
- Leverage customer and industry insights to identify new opportunities and adapt to changing consumer behaviors.
- Monitor competitors and market trends to ensure Dollar Tree remains a leader in value retail.
- Champion test-and-learn approaches for new products, pricing, and merchandising initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or related field (MBA preferred).
- 15+ years of progressive merchandising leadership experience, including senior level leadership responsibility overseeing large, complex portfolios.
- Experience within value retail, grocery, CPG, or discount channels.
- Demonstrated success in a high-volume, multi-location retail environment.
- Proven track record of P&L management, supplier negotiations, and driving profitable sales growth.
- Strong understanding of consumer behavior, category management, and pricing strategy.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and influence skills across executive teams.
- Highly analytical, data-driven decision maker with strong commercial acumen.
