Position Summary
The Manager of Tax Technology ensures accurate and efficient sales and tax compliance, minimizes tax risk, and optimizes processes across the organization. This role manages compliance activities, leads audits, provides tax research and guidance, and drives technology initiatives to enhance tax operations. The Manager of Tax Technology significantly impacts the company’s ability to collect, remit, and manage sales and use tax obligations effectively.
Key Responsibilities
- Compliance Management: Oversee sales tax and unclaimed property compliance, including execution of returns, timely payments, and account reconciliations.
- Tax Research & Advisory: Research SKU taxability and use tax issues. Stay current on sales and use tax laws, regulations, and rulings across jurisdictions, and assess their impact on the business. Identify tax-saving opportunities and process improvements and develop actionable plans.
- Audit Leadership: Manage sales tax and unclaimed property audits from start to finish. Communicate effectively with auditors, present facts clearly, and apply innovative problem-solving strategies.
- Technology & Process Optimization: Lead tax-related aspects of software implementations. Assess risks, identify issues, and recommend corrective actions. Maintain software taxability matrices, updating regularly for tax rate changes, law updates, and new product changes.
- Operational Support: Assist invoicing functions to ensure proper tax application, centralized documentation, and timely exemption certificate management.
- Account Reconciliation & Budgeting: Reconcile sales tax accounts, resolve discrepancies, and assist with departmental budgets for tax-related items.
- Internal Controls: Maintain and strengthen internal controls in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary point of contact for auditors and collaborate with internal teams to ensure accurate and timely tax reporting.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5–7 years of experience in sales and use tax or equivalent public accounting experience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills with strong technology aptitude.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA, CMA, or active candidate preferred.
- Experience preparing sales and use tax returns for multiple jurisdictions.
- Familiarity with ERP systems and tax software (e.g., Vertex, Sabrix, Avalara, etc.).
