Role Overview :

As a Senior Staff Backend Engineer, you will lead the design and development of distributed systems and next-generation platforms that power Coupang’s global e-commerce experience. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across geographies to solve complex problems at scale, while mentoring engineers and driving technical excellence across the organization.

What You Will Do :

• Lead the development of scalable and fault-tolerant backend systems

• Define and execute technical strategy in alignment with product roadmaps

• Drive architectural decisions and promote best practices across engineering teams

• Collaborate with senior leadership to prioritize and plan strategic initiatives

• Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement through Agile methodologies

• Own operational metrics and ensure high system reliability and observability

• Mentor and grow engineering talent through coaching and technical guidance

• Establish and manage operational support processes for backend services

Basic Qualifications :

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field

• 15+ years of experience in software development

• 10+ years of experience building and operating backend services and web applications

• Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Framework

• Deep expertise in distributed systems, storage, and server technologies

Preferred Qualifications :

• Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS)

• Hands-on experience with NoSQL and relational/columnar databases

• Familiarity with CI/CD automation and Agile methodologies

• Knowledge of observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and ELK stack

• Passion for reliability engineering and operational excellence

Type of Work Model :

• Hybrid
• Coupang hybrid work model is designed to enable a culture of collaboration that acts a catalyst to enrich the experience of employees. Employees are required to work at least 3 days in the office per week, with the flexibility to work from home 2 days a week, depending on the role requirement. Some businesses may require more time in office due to nature of work.
