About the team

The Streaming Player and Experience team is responsible for building and optimizing the end-to-end playback experience. We ensure an intuitive, stable and consistently immersive viewing experience by owning the client-side playback pipeline – from the core player engine to user-facing features. Our team collaborates closely with video infrastructure, product, and design to deliver a consistent and delightful experience across browsers, Smart TVs, and other web-based platforms.

Role Overview

As a Staff Web engineer in the Streaming Player and Experience team, you will help design and evolve the playback app service that powers our web-based streaming experience across web browsers, Smart TVs, and Chromecast web receiver. Your focus will be on building advanced playback features -- such as live time-machine, and multi-view. You will also be responsible for continuously improving playback performances through metric-driven iteration and technical deep dives. You will play a key role in shaping the playback architecture to meet current product needs while ensuring long-term flexibility, enabling a differentiated and immersive viewing experience.

What you will do

• Architect and evolve core components of the playback app service to support feature expansion, modularity, and platform consistency.

• Improve startup time, rebuffering, ABR logics, and other playback KPIs through technical deep dives and iterative improvements.

• Work cross-functionally with the streaming pipeline and product teams to provide users with the best streaming quality and user experience.

• Define and monitor real-time streaming metrics at high-profile live streaming events, and give technical guidance to live operation teams.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of professional software development experience with strong JavaScript and TypeScript skills.

• Experience with A/B testing and metrics analysis.

• Ability to design scalable architecture, to write clean, testable, efficient code, and to measure performance.

• Strong verbal and written communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with media codecs (AAC, AVC, HEVC, or AV1) and streaming protocols (HLS, DASH).

• Expertise in video streaming players such as Shaka, video.js, dash.js, or hls.js.

• Experience with web security and network security.

• Expertise in digital rights management (DRM) such as Widevine, Fairplay and Play Ready.
