Job Summary

The West Trader plays a critical role in delivering commercial value for Conoco Phillips by marketing company production and executing disciplined natural gas trading strategies within the Western United States. This role supports margin optimization for a growing portfolio while managing a sizeable third‑party marketing and trading business, directly contributing to the Commercial organization’s performance and market presence.Positioned within the Global Gas and Power Business Unit, the West Trader operates at the center of market analysis, execution, and relationship management. The role requires close collaboration with internal commercial, operations, and risk partners, as well as active engagement with external counterparties, to ensure reliable market access, strong customer relationships, and consistent, compliant execution in a dynamic trading environment.

Position Overview:

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Providing a reliable and competitive market outlet for Conoco Phillips’ natural gas production to support margin realization and portfolio optimization.

  • Identifying, evaluating, and executing disciplined marketing and trading strategies aligned with commercial objectives and risk parameters.

  • Supporting the development and execution of long‑term commercial marketing strategies to enhance portfolio value and market positioning.

  • Maintaining and expanding strategic relationships with customers, suppliers, pipelines, and other market participants to support commercial growth.

  • Optimizing company‑owned and third‑party transportation and storage assets to improve optionality and operational efficiency.

  • Ensuring executed trades and corresponding confirmations accurately reflect agreed commercial terms and support timely settlement and reconciliation.

  • Partnering with internal stakeholders to align trading activity with operational capabilities, market conditions, and business priorities.

Basic requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, a related field, or foreign equivalent.

  • 3 or more years of experience in natural gas trading or closely related commercial activities.

  • Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to work bid week, as well as occasional weekends and/or holidays.

Preferred requirements:

  • Prior experience trading, scheduling, or marketing natural gas in the Western United States.

  • Advanced knowledge of North American and Western regional natural gas supply and demand fundamentals.

  • Advanced understanding of the Western pipeline grid and interconnecting regions.

  • Strong working knowledge of risk management concepts and tools used in commodity trading environments.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft O365 applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Share Point, Outlook, and Teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships and deliver high‑quality service to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Track record of delivering on commitments and producing accurate, timely commercial deliverables.

  • Strong understanding of natural gas contracts and commercial structures.

  • Ability to anticipate issues, apply sound judgment, and execute decisions effectively in a fast‑paced trading environment.

  • Demonstrated collaboration and effectiveness within a team‑oriented trading floor setting.

  • Listens actively and invites dialogue to gain a shared understanding, then influences and acts to drive performance and achieve business results.

  • Builds positive relationships based on trust and seeks collaboration across organizational boundaries to achieve goals

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office or trading floor environment.

  • Role involves sustained computer use and continuous monitoring of market conditions.

  • Ability to manage fluctuating workloads and time‑sensitive decision‑making during peak market periods.
