A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Firmware Engineer to join our team.

Collins Aerospace makes modern flight possible. Of course, that wouldn’t be possible without the capabilities and technologies of our organization, as well as our engineers – a highly skilled, accomplished network that spans more than 180 sites, 24 countries and 6 Strategic Business Units (SBUs). Our industry-leading experts are setting the standards for the aerospace industry and paving the way for the future. But as new challenges present themselves, we need fresh, creative and motivated minds to overcome these hurdles, help us break barriers and achieve new levels of innovation.

Together, we will nurture an engineering culture that values intellectual curiosity, risk takers and integrity. A place where we will challenge ourselves, our teams, and the status quo and where we will work to find a way – the right way – to achieve what others can only dream of.

About Us We are currently seeking a Firmware Engineer with extensive VHDL experience and experience of FPGA and ASIC design or test to join our team within Collins Aerospace Electronic Controls and Motor Systems, Solihull. As part of our firmware team you will be involved in the implementation of controls for motor drive products for aircraft electric and hybrid electric propulsion.

We are working at the forefront of development of electric propulsion technologies, with motor and motor drive design being developed at our site. In 2026 we launched three new multi-year programs as part of the Clean Aviation Join Undertaking, these programs lead Europe in the development of technology blocks for future aircraft with entry into service expected in 2035.

Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, is a leader in technologically advanced and intelligent solutions for the global aerospace and defence industry. We have the extensive capabilities, comprehensive portfolio, and broad expertise to solve customers’ toughest challenges and to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global market for aircraft electric propulsion systems.

What You Will Do:

You will work in a collaborative team, working on complex specialist support to the design and development of high-performance world-class motor drive systems.

You will bring extensive Firmware / FPGA Experience, writing VHDL code for control of electric motors

You will work within our Firmware team as part of a larger multi-disciplinary project development team, applying best engineering standards and developing robust design practices.

You will own the RTL design, the FPGA implementation (synthesis, place & route) and will also support the testing of the overall digital controller inside the power converter.

What You Will Learn:

  • Working with airframers and customers to understand the technology progression to enable future electric flight
  • Learn about aerospace specific design considerations for safety and robust design

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Degree or equivalent in engineering
  • Experience with FPGA tools & technologies (e.g., Microchip, Xilinx, SoC, Modelsim, Matlab, Simulink)
  • Demonstrable practical experience of FPGA design and verification (VHDL) including requirements capture, simulation, code coverage, synthesis, place & route, and timing analysis & closure.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with other engineering disciplines.
  • Proven track record in delivering complex work packages.
  • Demonstrate technical experience regarding design and verification.
  • Deliver (taking a hands-on approach) in design, development, prototyping, verification, and delivery of DO254 compliant FPGAs
  • Embrace an innovative approach to problem solving, design implementation, process development and quality

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • An understanding of Agile methodologies (particularly SCRUM & Kanban).
  • An understanding of Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) and SysML.
  • An understanding of communication protocols, DSP and FPGA implementation of maths functions.
  • Experience of System on Chip (SoC) design targeting FPGA or ASIC.
  • Experience of applying closed loop control laws within FPGA applications.
  • Knowledge of motor control systems, sensing components (e.g., LVDT, Resolvers).
  • Experience with military or aerospace designs compliant to RTCA/DO-254.

What we can offer you:

  • Competitive salary.
  • Flexible working, hybrid working and a family friendly approach.
  • Outstanding state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories centrally located and easily accessible.
  • Life insurance.
  • Excellent corporate pension plan with a 2:1 matched contribution up to 10%.
  • Private Health Insurance.
  • 25 days annual leave plus ability to buy/sell up to 5 days.
  • Career development.
  • Half day working on Fridays.
  • And so much more!

From time to time the successful candidate may be required by the Company to perform other tasks and/or learn new skills which are not included in the above description, but are within the capabilities of the individual and, where necessary, training will be given.
