Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use imaging devices that emit sound waves to create the image that will help physicians assess and diagnose various conditions. There are different kinds of imaging devices, including ultrasounds, sonograms and echocardiograms. Generally, sonographic imaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections. In this role, you will perform imaging on both adults and pediatrics patients, allowing you to advance your skills through working with a diverse patient population. There is plenty of room for growth in this role, with team members promoting career development.
A caregiver in this position works Monday-Friday from 7: 00AM – 3:30PM, including two holidays per year.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
-
Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages.
-
Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric and vascular).
-
Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis.
-
Review charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam.
-
Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
-
Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.
-
Assist with scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
-
Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations.
-
Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determine priority of patients based on the daily schedules.
-
Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS.
-
Complete after-hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
-
Immediately report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
-
Process billing via RIS.
-
Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
-
Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies.
-
Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers.
-
Assist with orienting new caregivers to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols.
-
Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors.
-
Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations.
-
Assist in new investigative techniques, procedures and equipment.
-
Maintain the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums.
-
Maintain RDMS and in good standing.
-
If working within the Imaging Institute: perform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volume readings and assist the physician during invasive studies.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
-
Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing
-
Two years of recent modality experience
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross
-
Pediatric Sonography specialized certification
-
OBGYN/Women’s Health Institute: Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) within one year of hire
-
Certification within OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) must be obtained within one year of hire
-
Completed specialized training in Maternal Fetal Medicine
-
Imaging Institute: Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire
-
One certification within Abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) or Vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire. The other two certifications must be obtained within 18 months of hire
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- One year of experience in pediatric ultrasound
Physical Requirements:

Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
-
•Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
