Cleveland Clinic’s Park West Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) strives to be the best place to receive ophthalmic surgical care/pain management services and the best place to work in healthcare. This small team works hard and always puts patients first. The hours of operation are Monday – Thursday and some Fridays with the benefit of no nights, weekends, holidays or on-call requirements!

Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, prepare sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization. This role offers a hands-on learning environment with opportunities to enhance technical skills and grow professionally each day.

A caregiver in this position works days from 7: 00AM – 3:30PM. The part-time schedule consists of working 3 days one week and 2 days the next, primarily Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.

  • Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery.

  • Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.

  • Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.

  • Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”

  • Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and give specimens to circulator for disposition.

  • If in an Ambulatory setting the following duties may be assigned:

  • Coordinate surgical and clinical schedules.

  • Assist with outpatient clinic flow.

  • Provide information to patients and family.

  • Assist with coordinating outpatient procedure room cases and supplies.

  • Assist with orientation of new hires.

  • Work on unit committees.

  • Assist with marketing and practice development.

  • Coordinate studies for sections.

  • Answer patient phone calls, gather information and relays to provider.

  • Perform post-op phone calls and relay information to provider.

  • Provide information back to patient based on provider instruction.

  • Scribe for provider in outpatient clinic.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)

  • OR completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program

  • Certification of either CST or TS-C required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Certified Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Surgical Tech experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.

  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours.

  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

  • Medium Work

  • Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $28.50

Maximum hourly: $39.00

A successful candidate’s actual compensation will be determined after taking factors into consideration such as the candidate’s work history, experience, skill set and education. The pay range displayed does not include any applicable pay practices (e.g., shift differentials, overtime, etc.).
