The Counsel III is an intermediate level position responsible for providing legal guidance and thought leadership to the Business. The overall objective of this role is to provide legal support, advice, and guidance to the Business.
This role requires a pragmatic, proactive attorney with thorough understanding of the Business, combined with a solid conceptual / practical grounding in the laws and regulations for the geographies in which we operate. Provides input into strategic decisions, exercising sound legal judgement to develop proactive, risk-appropriate, and commercially practical business-oriented solutions.
Job Description:
Assist in managing a portfolio of massive and significant cases, reviewing procedural documents and developing defense strategies: contract review actions, compensation claims, adverse possession claims, and administrative proceedings; Manage external law firms acting as legal counsel in the aforementioned actions; Provide technical legal support to the Bank's internal areas on matters involving or potentially resulting in legal or arbitration disputes; Analyze and validate risk and provision reports related to Citigroup's case database; Act as deputy to the team's senior counsel in case of scheduled or unexpected absences; Conduct external audits of contracted external law firms; Conduct internal and external audits of Citigroup's case database; Review and/or draft contract terms for service providers, as well as manage their administrative implications. Assist in the handling of criminal matters.
Responsibilities:
Supervise external counsel and resolve issues, escalating to manager as needed
Provide legal advice in one area of practice within a product, country or business
Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating and reporting control issues with transparency.
Qualifications:
3-6 years of relevant experience
Valid bar license to practice law (OAB)
Relevant experience preferably from another bank or a premier law firm
Comprehensive knowledge of local, state and federal laws and practices
Consistently demonstrate clear and concise written and verbal communication
Proven analytical and organizational skills
Advanced English
Education:
- Bachelor's degree/University degree.
