Citi is currently looking for a high calibre professional to join our team as** Vice President, Legal Counsel, Investor Services – Hybrid,** based in Sydney, Australia. You will be supporting the high growth Investor Services businesses providing advice and legal support in a range of areas including custody, fund administration and associated functions.
You will work as part of a collaborative, close-knit legal team in Sydney as well as part of the wider Citi Legal community. You will have the opportunity to work collegiately across jurisdictions, providing high quality legal and regulatory advice and counsel to stakeholders across our firm. In conjunction with the other Citi Australia & NZ Legal team members you will work closely with APAC regional legal colleagues and with colleagues across the globe to deliver timely and compliant advice/outcomes. This is an integral role in the success of the Investor Services business. As such you will be building strong relationships with business colleagues, becoming a trusted adviser who is involved at all stages of the client journey and integral to successful and sustainable client outcomes. This position also advises other functional teams that support Investor Services and other Citi Australia & NZ businesses.
The Citi Legal team works together collaboratively, and are exposed to different areas of work across the franchise. These other areas may include franchise wide legal projects involving legislative and regulatory change affecting the broader business, global projects and innovating in how we work through AI, as well as cross franchise matters such as licencing queries, outsourcing and procurement contracts. You will be involved in:
- Negotiations with clients on custody services agreements, fund administration agreements, and a range of other documentation related to Investor Services activity.
- Legal and regulatory advice to the Investor Services business regarding new and existing regulations, contractual matters and client complaints or issues.
- Legal advice and support to business management on legal, control function and regulatory matters associated with Investor Services activities; ensuring that Citi is appropriately addressing legal, regulatory, franchise and reputational risks.
- Supporting strategic initiatives of the business with guidance and interpretations of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and industry practices, and advising business management on legal matters impacting the business.
- Coordinating the provision of internal and external legal support to Citi’s local businesses, working closely with the relevant Regional Product Counsel to ensure that Citi’s legal needs are met in a cost-effective manner.
- Collaborating across internal lines of business, control/support functions and/or external counsel to achieve coordinated and efficient outcomes on matters of common interest, coordinating closely with Legal team members, as appropriate.
- Monitoring key legal and regulatory developments that may impact or otherwise be relevant to Citi’s businesses in the country, including those involving other financial institutions, are appropriately monitored and that country management is apprised of significant developments
- Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citi, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behaviour, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency, as well as effectively supervise the activity of others and create accountability with those who fail to maintain these standards
As a successful candidate, you’re expected to have:
- At least 6 to 10 years’ post-qualification legal experience, either in-house or private practice in a common law jurisdiction.
- Extensive experience in dealing with legal issues and transactions in custody and fund administration.
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and practices.
- Proven analytical and organisational skills.
- A demonstrated ability to provide clear and concise written and verbal communication to varied audiences
- Sound legal judgement to develop proactive, risk-appropriate, and commercially practical business-oriented solutions.
- Flexibility and willingness to apply their skills to products, issues and legislation, in new areas.
- Strong time management skills, practical solutions focused and a history of providing excellent client service.
- Strong team spirit and enthusiasm; willing to contribute to broader legal team and business initiatives, and to support more junior lawyers in the team.
- Ability to create and build effective working relationships with colleagues, business and functional teams.
- A current Australian practicing certificate or an ability to obtain one by the date of commencement.
In this role, you’d ideally have the following skills and exposure:
- Experience in dealing with legal and regulatory issues related to Custodian and Funds Administration businesses
- Experience working across jurisdictions
