JOB DUTIES:
Caterpillar applies advanced analytics to solve complex business problems across supply chain, procurement, quality, cost optimization, and product development. These efforts support initiatives such as inventory and NPI cost optimization, supply reliability, supplier health assessment, quality prediction, healthcare cost analysis, and simulation for new facilities or products.
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will lead analytic teams, provide technical direction, and partner with cross functional stakeholders to deliver high impact solutions for Caterpillar business units, dealers, and customers.
The Senior Data Scientist will:
· Lead and contribute to 3 - 4 concurrent analytics projects with significant business impact
· Apply advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to solve business problems
· Coach and mentor other Data Scientists in model development, validation, and deployment
· Provide technical leadership while balancing innovation with customer commitments
· Communicate complex analytical results clearly to non-technical audiences
· Proactively research and apply emerging analytics methods and technologies
· Develop a deep understanding of Caterpillar’s products, systems, processes, customers, and market environment
MUST HAVE:
· Bachelor's degree in statistics, economics, mathematics, engineering, or a related quantitative discipline with 7-10 years of quantitative analysis experience; alternatively, a Master's degree with 4-6 years of relevant experience, or a PhD with 1-3 years of relevant experience.
· Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL.
· Comprehensive knowledge of various machine learning algorithms.
· Strong command of MS Office and data visualization tools such as Power BI.
· Proven leadership abilities, self-motivation, effective interpersonal skills, and exceptional communication capabilities.
Desirable Qualifications:
· Practical experience with Deep Learning models, Large Language Models (LLM), and Agentic AI
· Proficiency with Snowflake data platform
· Experience with GitHub, DBT, Copilot, and cloud-native tools

Machine Learning: Knowledge of principles, technologies and algorithms of machine learning; ability to develop, implement and deliver related systems, products and services.
Level Working Knowledge:
- Completes specific tasks and initiatives utilizing machine learning technologies, such as search engine optimization.
- Utilizes specific tools and techniques to process descriptive and inferential statistics.
- Applies specific computing languages and tools in machine learning, such as R and Python.
- Explores to use machine learning in one own areas to make business improvements.
- Conducts data mining and cleaning initiatives.
Programming Languages: Knowledge of basic concepts and capabilities of programming; ability to use tools, techniques and platforms in order to write and modify programming languages.
Level Working Knowledge:
- Participates in the implementation and support of specialized programming languages.
- Conducts basic reviews on writing a specific programming language within a specific platform.
- Assists with the design and development of specialized programming languages.
- Follows an organization's standards, policies and guidelines for structured programming specifications.
- Diagnoses and reports minor or routine programming language problems.
This role is expected to be hybrid for the near future with limited days in the office every month and flexible hours.
Relocation is available for this position.
