Caterpillar Career Pathways Program – Supply Chain Planning

Program Overview

The 12‑month Caterpillar Career Pathways Program provides high school seniors with an opportunity to build foundational skills in preparation for a long‑term career in Supply Chain Planning at Caterpillar.

Selected students participate in a structured, multi‑phase program designed to develop computer, analytical, and professional skills needed to support planning and operational decision‑making in a manufacturing environment. Participants earn high school credit while gaining hands‑on experience and receiving a paid hourly wage from Caterpillar.

Program Structure

The Career Pathways Program consists of three phases:

Phase I: Summer Internship

Introduction to Caterpillar’s supply chain, planning processes, and basic computer tools used to support operations.

Phase II: Fall Semester Co‑Op (For High School Credit)On‑the‑job learning focused on data entry, reporting, and understanding material and production flows using Excel and other planning tools.

Phase III: Spring Semester Co‑Op (For High School Credit)Advanced exposure to supply chain planning activities with increased responsibility and preparation for full‑time roles following graduation.

Position Summary: Supply Chain Planning

The Supply Chain Planning role supports Caterpillar’s operations by assisting with data tracking, reporting, and planning activities that help ensure materials and products are available to meet production and customer needs. Participants develop basic computer and Excel skills while learning how planning decisions impact manufacturing performance.

Primary Responsibilities

Computer & Data Skills

  • Use basic computer applications to enter, review, and maintain supply chain and planning data.
  • Utilize Excel to track material availability, production schedules, inventory levels, or demand data.
  • Assist with creating and updating spreadsheets, reports, and simple charts.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of data used for planning and decision‑making.

Supply Chain & Planning Support

  • Learn how materials, production schedules, and inventory flow through Caterpillar’s supply chain.
  • Support planners by gathering data, organizing information, and updating planning tools.
  • Assist with monitoring key metrics such as inventory levels, delivery status, or production requirements.
  • Follow standard work instructions related to planning and data management.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills

  • Communicate clearly with supply chain planners, operations teams, and supervisors.
  • Participate in team meetings, daily check‑ins, and problem‑solving discussions.
  • Ask questions, seek feedback, and demonstrate a willingness to learn.

Safety & Quality

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures applicable to office and operational environments.
  • Support Caterpillar’s quality standards by maintaining accurate data and documentation.
  • Maintain an organized and professional work area.
