What you’d be doing in this role
As Canva scales, change continues to be part of our DNA — and we like to think that’s part of the fun. This role sits within Infrastructure → Observability, where we build the platforms that give engineers deep, reliable insight into how Canva behaves in production.
At the moment, this role is focused on:
-
Owning and leading a high-performing engineering team, with a strong focus on career development, wellbeing, and impact
-
Partnering with Engineering Managers and Staff Engineers to define and execute Canva’s longer-term observability strategy
-
Translating high-level goals into clear roadmaps, priorities, and delivery plans
-
Owning the reliability, availability, and performance of Canva’s critical observability platforms, including tracing and exception systems
-
Driving modernisation of the observability stack, including deeper Open Telemetry adoption and platform improvements
-
Ensuring observability capabilities translate into intuitive, effective developer experiences across workflows, visualisations, and tooling
You’re probably a match if
-
You’ve held a technical leadership role, including people leadership or team management experience
-
You’ve built, operated, or supported large-scale distributed systems in cloud environments (AWS ideally)
-
You have strong foundations in computer engineering and systems thinking
-
You care deeply about reliability, scalability, and developer experience
-
You communicate clearly and can align teams through thoughtful documentation and discussion
Nice to have (but not essential):
-
Experience with Open Telemetry
-
Experience working with observability tooling such as Grafana, Mimir, Click House, or similar
-
Experience coding in Go
About the team
The Observability Group enables Canva’s engineers to move fast without compromising reliability. We work across the full observability stack — from telemetry libraries and ingestion pipelines to storage platforms and developer-facing tools — combining best-in-class third-party solutions with in-house platforms built at Canva scale.
