About Blue Origin

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

About the Role

This role is part of Tera Wave, a satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations.

As an Embedded Systems Engineer at Blue Origin, you will be instrumental in bringing our next-generation phased array and software-defined radio systems to life. You will be a foundational member of our in-house RF communications team, responsible for the embedded software and firmware that controls and orchestrates our advanced beamforming ASICs and digital communication systems. In this role, you will bridge the gap between hardware and high-level control systems, developing the embedded software stack that enables our spacecraft communication systems to operate autonomously and efficiently in the harsh space environment. This is an opportunity to work on mission-critical embedded systems from concept through flight qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop embedded firmware for FPGA-based and ASIC-based digital communication systems, including control interfaces, configuration management, and telemetry collection
  • Implement real-time control algorithms and state machines for beamforming systems, phased array calibration, and adaptive communication protocols
  • Develop device drivers and board support packages (BSPs) for custom RF and digital hardware
  • Create and maintain embedded software architecture for spacecraft communication subsystems, ensuring deterministic behavior and fault tolerance
  • Interface with DSP engineers to integrate signal processing algorithms into embedded runtime environments
  • Implement health monitoring, diagnostics, and telemetry systems for communication hardware
  • Collaborate with systems engineers to define and implement command and data handling (C&DH) interfaces
  • Conduct software integration testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and system-level validation
  • Support hardware bring-up activities and debug complex hardware-software integration issues

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with 3+ years of experience in embedded systems development
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems with constrained resources
  • Experience developing firmware for real-time operating systems (RTOS) such as Vx Works, FreeRTOS, or equivalent
  • Hands-on experience with embedded Linux and/or bare-metal firmware development
  • Familiarity with hardware interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, PCIe, Ethernet, and memory-mapped I/O
  • Experience with embedded debugging tools, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes
  • Understanding of memory management, interrupt handling, and real-time constraints in embedded systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in a related field
  • Experience with FPGA co-processing and hardware acceleration
  • Knowledge of space-grade processors (e.g., RAD750, Leon, ARM Cortex-R/M for space)
  • Experience with DO-178C, MISRA-C, or other safety-critical software standards
  • Familiarity with digital communication protocols and RF system control
  • Experience with version control (Git), continuous integration, and automated testing frameworks
  • Previous work on aerospace, satellite, or mission-critical communication systems
  • Experience taking a complex RF communications system from concept through to validation and deployment in an aerospace or mission-critical environment
