FPGA Firmware Engineer

  • In-Space Systems

About the Role

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit. As part of a hardworking team of engineers, you will develop FPGA firmware for mixed signal electrical avionics and integrate our innovative circuit boards enabling high performance, sophisticated spaceflight computer and related systems. You will share in the team's impact on all aspects of development, manufacturing, and operation of spacecraft systems to address one of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space mobility.

Experience in crafting firmware for FPGA-based avionics systems required. Proficiency in VHDL or Verilog crucial. You will also need experience with FPGA development tools and methodologies, including simulation, synthesis, and verification.

This role will stretch your imagination and challenge your abilities. No matter how phenomenal your skills are, you will still be faced with tasks that are above your current ability. We will ask you to embrace this and grow with us. You will have the satisfaction of working to help build the Road to Space.

Teamwork is vital for collaborating with engineers to integrate firmware with system components. You will need to be able to communicate technical information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities

  • Develop firmware requirements in coordination with systems engineering, hardware engineering, software engineering, and subsystem owners.
  • Develop FPGA designs and implement hardware description languages.
  • Perform verification techniques such as simulation, Verilog, System Verilog, VHDL, OVM, and UVM.
  • Author tests, and documentation, and participate in design reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of FPGA/ASIC design and verification work experience.
  • Proven firmware development skills in real-time embedded systems, particularly in Verilog/System Verilog/VHDL.
  • Experience designing, developing, and verifying high-performance FPGA or ASIC solutions for use in highly integrated (SW and HW) systems.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and build a culture of teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possessing 6+ years of expertise in FPGA/ASIC development.
  • Experience with Modelsim, or Questsim simulators and Synopsys tools for design from vendors such as Microchip, Xilinx, and/or Altera.
  • Experience with Xilinx Vivado and/or Intel Quartus development platforms to optimally build, test, and deploy hardware implementations.

Special Mentions

  • Relocation provided
  • Travel expected up to 10% of the time
  • Interviews will include a technical assessment
