About the Role

The Staff Developer – CI/CD is a senior individual contributor role responsible for technical leadership, solution delivery, and operational ownership of CI/CD platforms and services. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy and is accountable for end-to-end delivery, quality, and reliability of assigned initiatives while mentoring team members and influencing broader engineering practices. The role focuses on complex problem solving, cross-team collaboration, and growing technical capability, while ensuring alignment with architectural standards and business objectives.

In this role, you will design, implement, and support CI/CD systems that enable hundreds of developers to build, test, and deploy software rapidly, reliably, and securely, and in compliance with regulatory controls. You will work across multiple teams to improve developer experience, evolve build and deployment frameworks, and ensure infrastructure and pipelines remain efficient, observable, auditable and resilient.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end delivery of CI/CD initiatives across teams, from design and implementation through deployment, production support, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead complex technical initiatives independently, setting technical direction and producing high-level designs covering architectural, security, and operational requirements.
  • Design, build, operate, and support scalable CI/CD platforms, build systems, and automated deployment pipelines across AWS and Azure.
  • Standardize deployment patterns, release templates, and environment promotion models to reduce risk and accelerate delivery.
  • Design and enforce fully automated, repeatable, and auditable deployment pipelines aligned with governance, compliance, and change management requirements.
  • Enable progressive delivery strategies and ensure applications are CD-ready, including safe rollbacks and backward compatibility.
  • Establish and uphold engineering standards for CI/CD quality, reliability, security, observability, and supply chain integrity.
  • Own CI/CD production incident response, including on-call escalation, root cause analysis, post-incident reviews, and long-term remediation.
  • Use DORA metrics and operational signals to identify bottlenecks and drive continuous improvement.
  • Mentor engineers and influence delivery through technical leadership, collaboration with Product and Platform teams, and evolution of internal developer platforms and tooling.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 9+ years of experience in software development, DevOps, or build/release engineering.
  • Advanced experience in CI/CD, DevOps, or platform engineering as a senior individual contributor.
  • Strong software development and system design skills using Python, Go, Java, or TypeScript.
  • Expertise in build automation tools such as Bazel, Make, Gradle, Maven.
  • Proven experience with CI/CD platforms (Jenkins, CircleCI, Buildkite, GitHub Actions).
  • Proficiency with infrastructure as code (Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation).
  • Experience working in Linux-based environments.
  • Hands-on experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS/EKS).
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals and cloud environments (AWS, Azure).

Preferred/Additional Skills

  • Experience with building or operating internal developer platforms like Backstage platform development and plugin integration.
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Open Telemetry).
  • Exposure to machine image creation (Packer).
  • Knowledge of secure CI/CD practices and software supply chain risk management.
  • Experience with .NET build and deployment automation.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound technical decisions in ambiguous situations.
  • Experience working across multiple technology stacks and adapting to new frameworks with minimal guidance.
  • Demonstrated alignment of technical delivery with business and organizational objectives.

Who You Are

  • You care deeply about developer productivity and platform reliability.
  • You're passionate about automation, scalability, and reducing manual toil.
  • You balance speed with risk awareness and compliance.
  • You collaborate effectively across teams while thriving in independent ownership.
  • You seek continuous improvement and tie your success to the success of your internal customers - the developers.
