Here, you'll bridge the gap between research and production-translating novel ML approaches into robust, high-performance systems that delight and inspire millions of Apple customers every day. This is a unique opportunity to blend ML expertise with systems engineering in service of a mission that truly matters.

Description:

The Applied Sensing & Health team delivers critical Health and Fitness features for Apple Watch, i Phone, and other Apple products. We are seeking a versatile applied ML engineer who thrives at the intersection of research and production systems. In this pivotal role, you will:

  • Translate cutting-edge ML research into optimized, production-ready algorithms for sensor data processing

  • Design and conduct data-driven research to improve fitness and health algorithms, analyzing large-scale sensor datasets to derive actionable insights

  • Implement ML models and pipelines end-to-end-from prototyping in Python to production deployment in C++

  • Collaborate with research scientists to evaluate new approaches and drive them toward production

  • Build tools and infrastructure for data analysis, model evaluation, and algorithm validation

Your work will span the entire ML workflow: researching novel approaches, prototyping solutions, analyzing data at scale, and implementing robust production systems. You'll work closely with ML researchers, health scientists, and multi-disciplinary teams across Apple, delivering best-in-class systems that impact millions of users daily.

Preferred Qualifications:

A demonstrated passion for health and fitness, driven to empower users through technology

Experience with sensor data analysis, signal processing, or time-series modeling

Knowledge of biomechanics, exercise physiology, or human movement analysis

C++ programming skills with ability to optimize ML algorithms for production systems, including performance tuning and memory management

Understanding of systems-level programming concepts including multi-threading,concurrency, and real-time constraints

Publications or demonstrated research contributions in ML, computer vision, or related areas

Track record of shipping ML-powered products or features at scale

Minimum Qualifications:

MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Electrical Engineering, or related field

3+ years of experience applying ML to real-world problems.

Strong foundation in machine learning with hands-on experience across the full ML workflow: research, experimentation, model development, evaluation, and production deployment

Proficiency in Python for ML development, data analysis, and statistical modeling; experience with ML frameworks (Py Torch, Tensor Flow, scikit-learn, etc.)

Experience translating research papers or prototypes into production-quality code

Strong data analysis skills: comfortable working with large datasets, conducting experiments, visualizing results, and drawing meaningful conclusions

Demonstrated ability to work independently on research problems while also collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams

Familiarity with modern GenAI-enabled development workflows and tools (e.g., AI-assisted coding, automated code generation, intelligent debugging), coupled with a strong aptitude for learning and adapting to evolving technologies.

Intellectual curiosity and willingness to dive deep into both algorithmic details and implementation challenges

Exceptional communication skills; able to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
