About the Role
Do you love utilizing your creativity, spatial reasoning & attention to detail to collaboratively solve design challenges? The Apple Data Center Product Design Engineering team works with other engineering groups to seamlessly integrate technology into the next generation of Apple's Server and Storage Hardware. We apply a genuine sense of curiosity and a dedication to innovative design to develop Apple's industry-leading, large-scale server and storage hardware architectures. As a Data Center Product Design Engineer, you will support development of systems from chip to server to rack. Your role will be to engineer products from concept to production in order to produce the most energy efficient, cost effective, and scalable designs possible!
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with system architects, product integrity, hardware, software, and technology groups to define, refine, and execute on the design of the product.
- Develop initial product layouts, generate concepts, prototype, demonstrate & test to drive decision-making.
- Create specifications for design partners to implement.
- Partner with external vendors & internal subject matter experts to optimize designs for performance, security, cost, service and manufacturability.
- Ensure designs meet requirements throughout their lifecycle by performing stress, tolerance, and failure analyses.
- Work closely with our data center operations team, security, and safety teams to ensure that designs meet or exceed our existing standards and agreements.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree
- Strong engineering fundamentals: solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer, mechanism design, manufacturing
- Ability to travel up to 20% in North America and Asia to support factory builds
Preferred Qualifications
- MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 2 years Mechanical Engineering experience, or equivalent internship experience
- Experience with the server mechanical development cycle from prototyping to high volume manufacturing
- Working knowledge of tolerance analysis, metrology and simple fixture design, fit and function validation, and mechanical testing methodologies including Instron, strain gauge, accelerometer
- Experience with failure analysis; strong logical reasoning skills and methodical approach to finding root cause
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills: ability to clearly convey design ideas and requirements within the team and to cross-functional partners and vendors
- Ability to engage in healthy collaborative debate and a keen analytical mindset
- A strong sense of ownership and drive for excellence
