Shape the Future of Payments in Japan

American Express is looking for a forward-thinking payments professional to join our Japan team as Manager, Payments Consulting.

In this role, you will be at the center of Japan’s evolving payments ecosystem—working with leading merchants, PSPs, acquirers, POS providers, and fintech partners to accelerate and optimize American Express acceptance. You will play a critical role in enabling seamless transaction experiences, driving integration initiatives, and influencing industry standards.

If you have built or enabled payment solutions in a PSP, fintech, acquiring, or payment network environment and are looking to expand your impact at global scale, this role offers a unique opportunity to combine innovation, strategy, and ecosystem leadership.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as a strategic payments advisor to merchants and partners, driving technical enablement and optimizing American Express acceptance
  • Lead complex payment integration and enablement initiatives across PSPs, acquirers, and POS platforms
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with business, product, technology, and global teams to implement scalable, future-ready payment solutions
  • Identify friction points in authorization, clearing, settlement, and integration flows—and drive improvements that enhance performance and merchant experience
  • Build and manage senior-level relationships across Japan’s payments ecosystem, including:
    • Payment Service Providers (PSPs)
    • Acquirers and processors
    • POS and gateway providers
    • Payment solution innovators
    • Industry associations and working groups
  • Represent American Express in industry forums and working groups, influencing standards and aligning ecosystem developments with strategic priorities
  • Translate market trends, regulatory developments, and emerging technologies into actionable strategies that drive competitive advantage

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in payments, fintech, acquiring, PSP, gateway, or related environments
  • Strong understanding of card payment processing flows (authorization, clearing, settlement) and merchant integration models
  • Experience managing or supporting technical integrations between merchants and payment platforms
  • A consultative mindset with the ability to bridge business strategy and technical execution
  • Proven project management capability in fast-moving, cross-functional environments
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders across external partners and internal matrix organizations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive, ownership-driven approach
  • Excellent communication skills in both Japanese and English
  • Ability to operate effectively in both local Japan and global business environments

Why This Role

  • Work at the intersection of global scale and local innovation
  • Influence Japan’s payments ecosystem and industry direction
  • Engage with leading PSPs, fintech innovators, and enterprise merchants
  • Drive high-visibility initiatives with measurable business impact
  • Expand your exposure across strategy, integration, and industry leadership

We back you with benefits that support your holistic well-being so you can be and deliver your best. This means caring for you and your loved ones' physical, financial, and mental health, as well as providing the flexibility you need to thrive personally and professionally:

  • Competitive base salaries
  • Bonus incentives
  • Support for financial-well-being and retirement
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and disability benefits (depending on location)
  • Flexible working model with hybrid, onsite or virtual arrangements depending on role and business need
  • Generous paid parental leave policies (depending on your location)
  • Free access to global on-site wellness centers staffed with nurses and doctors (depending on location)
  • Free and confidential counseling support through our Healthy Minds program
  • Career development and training opportunities
