American Express Global Commercial Services (GCS) Products is the leading payment card issuer for corporations and small businesses, offering products, services, and capabilities to help them run and grow their business. Within GCS, the Commercial Product Design team is seeking a Director of Product Design for our Middle Market Digital Experience team to play a critical role crafting the future of these digital experiences for our customers.
How will you make an impact in this role?
You will combine expertise in your craft with a data-informed knowledge of customers to create impactful experiences that deliver on our business goals. Collaboration is critical to our success, so we value those who build relationships, and have the curiosity to ask important questions, speak up and debate ideas. We also need strategic thinkers to connect the dots across experiences and leverage knowledge of market and industry trends to inform their decision making.
Key Responsibilities

Develops and communicates a compelling design vision and strategy for our Middle Market Digital Experience that aligns with the company’s business goals

Stays up-to-date with industry trends, new technologies and standard methodologies in product design and integrates them into the design strategy
-
Collaborate with key partners within the Middle Market Digital Experience team and relevant groups, including product managers, engineers and executives to define and prioritize design initiatives
-
Ensures the effective management of designers through planning, scoping and delivery of all design work
-
Partners closely with digital product management leaders to contribute to and influence the design strategy for their product or set of products
-
Champions a user-centric design approach, ensuring that the end users’ needs, behaviors and pain points are at the core of the design process
-
Define and maintain design principles, guidelines and standards to ensure consistency and quality across our team and other enterprise products
-
Leads, encourages and manages a team of product designers, providing guidance, mentorship and support to cultivate their professional growth
-
Set clear goals and expectations for the design team, and ensure they are aligned with the company’s overall objectives
-
Champions effective collaboration between the design team and other departments
-
Presents design concepts, strategies and recommendations to executive partners and other cross-functional teams, optimally articulating rationale and benefits

Occasional travel
Minimum Qualifications
-
Consistent record of success as a people leader
-
7+ years’ experience in digital product design with experience leading teams
-
Experience in a global organization
-
Mastery in one of the following / Excellence in the rest: UX Design, UI Design, Visual Design, System Design, Service Design or Content Design
-
Practice in Design Thinking methods and applications
-
Strategic attitude and lean on data to advise decisions
-
Knowledgeable about Agile-based methods for product development
-
Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills to engage, inspire and influence
-
Excellent mediation and facilitation skills
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience lead a design team with a proven track record of design success through measurable impact

Experience in Mobile App design
Salary Range: $144,250.00 to $256,250.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
