Amazon seeks a Sr. Operation Manager to join the Japan Amazon Extra Large (AMXL) team. As a leader of a core function of AMXL JP, you will be shaping the network, executing, developing and applying innovation in our delivery network concepts. This role requires working across cross-functional teams within and outside Japan. This role would expand and setup the last mile of the network defining and delivering results on key metrics, driving third party (3PL) and amazon managed (Blue Badge) sites for systems enhancements. This position involves regular communication with senior management spanning strategy to execution. People management, new delivery station launches and management, and executive presentation skills are essential. Additional responsibilities include managing and leading a team of Operations, Area Managers, coaching and mentoring the team to ensure performance objectives are met, building positive employee relations and building leadership bench strength within all sites.
Key job responsibilities
Responsible for the overall safety, quality, performance, customer experience and people development for last mile operations
· Drives vision for operations team and creation of quality initiatives, process change initiatives and other lean initiatives to enable their functional area and ultimately the last mile to meet and exceed business plan
· Problem-solves for closing gaps between performance and goals
· Will set and clarify requirements and expectations for Operations, Area Managers. Measures performance, provides feedback, and holds Ops Managers accountable for their performance and the performance of their departments/teams
· Manages an environment concerning the delivery of Amazon orders direct to our customers, subject to ever rising volume and complexity, operating on a 24/7 basis
· Manages day-to-day relationships with multiple Delivery Service Providers (DSPs)
· Presents operational metrics regularly to the senior leadership team
· Hires and develops top talent. Creates and implements a talent plan for the site including talent acquisition, performance and career management, learning and development, succession planning, and employee engagement
· Leverages the Operations, Area and Shift Managers by sourcing and nurturing ideas, and rolling them into the creation of improvement plans for the functional area
· Cultivates strong culture and engagement throughout all levels of the delivery station team
· Takes proactive steps to ensure that best practices are shared across all departments, shifts and among the network.
· Works with key business partners such as Transport & Sortation, DSP Management, Finance, Loss Prevention, IT, HR, ACES and Engineering to build and secure support and resources for projects and initiatives in their area, as well as providing needed support and resources for other staff initiatives
※Flex-time schedule is applied to this position though sometimes oversight for night shift is required.
A day in the life
You spend time visiting or building multiple Amazon owned or third party delivery and sort centers in Japan reviewing the operations and setting up the right processes and mechanisms to drive safety, cost, speed and availability at every instance. You hire, develop and motivate your team to deliver against the same goals using the Amazon leadership principles that you truly embody with all your actions.

AMXL JP team is a single threaded organization that owns Amazon's end-to-end Heavy & Bulky (H&B) logistics network with our willing and equally customer obsessed partners, offering shipping, service & support for consumers and companies in a safe, reliable, seamless, standardized, and sustainable way that surprises and delights our customers. Our delivery partners are experienced in H&B deliveries, providing special handling services such as Room of Choice Delivery, Installation/Assembly and Recycling/Haul-Away.
Our team is made up of a diverse group of individuals across operations, supply chain, tech, finance, planning, customer experience, business intelligence and program management that work closely and collaboratively across Amazon to constantly improve and scale our operations, always insisting on the highest standards and obsessing over delivering bigger smiles for our customers.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Experience in Business English skills, both verbal and written
- Experience in program management, logistics, operations, supply chain, transportation, or a related field
- 4+ years of people management experience
- Experience in written and oral communication, including the ability to communicate with all levels in the organization (technical, business, executive)
Preferred Qualifications
- Speak, write, and read fluently in Japanese
- 5+ years of retail or operations, or 5+ years of management experience
- Experience managing a budget or P&L
- Experience in the management of large teams (50+ members)
- Experience prioritizing and handling multiple assignments at any given time while maintaining commitment to deadlines, or experience managing multiple calendars
- Experience in customer-facing leadership roles
- Experience with computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Work flexible schedules including weekends, nights, and holidays
- Bachelor's degree, or MBA in management, business administration, economics, engineering, marketing
- Experience dealing well with ambiguity, prioritizing needs, and delivering measurable results in an agile environment
- Experience hiring and developing highly effective and diverse teams.
