We are seeking a Software Development Engineer with a passion for innovating on behalf of e Book customers to simplify e Book purchases and Kindle subscriptions. You will build innovative experiences that reduce transaction friction and create extensible solutions for digital purchase experiences that can be leveraged across multiple digital businesses.
This role offers a unique opportunity to collaborate across services, design and propose new architectures or modify existing ones, and drive the right technical trade-offs between short-term and long-term concerns. You will navigate significant complexity while building features that require changes across various services and pages, including e Books purchase and store experiences for digital products. The complexity extends further as these features must be scalable and work seamlessly across multiple digital businesses and surfaces, including PC Web Browser, Mobile Web browser, Amazon Android application, Free Kindle reading apps on iOS and Android, and Amazon's E-reader devices.
- Key job responsibilities
- As a member of the team, you will spend your time as a hands-on engineer and a technical leader who takes ownership of business/technical problem end to end.
- You will play a key role in defining the architecture for software using a wide range of technologies, programming languages and systems.
- You will be given the freedom to explore your own ideas with the reward of seeing your code raise the bar for millions of Amazon customers worldwide, including your own family and friends.
- You will interface with product manager & stakeholders to understand the business requirements.
- You will author detailed design covering process/data flow diagrams, key trade-offs, technology & cost considerations that you will review with your team’s SDEs/Sr. SDEs as well as impacted upstream/downstream interface SDEs/Sr. SDEs to incorporate feedback resulting in well thought out high quality designs.
- You will engage in design reviews within team as well as within org with aim of providing feedback to elevate the quality of designs.
- You will engage in various team ceremonies like code reviews, daily standup, sprint planning, backlog grooming, sprint retros, operational excellence hand-offs.
- You will actively engage in operational support for your team, and ensure that the root causes of operational issues are identified and resolved.
- You don’t settle for the status quo, and routinely identify and execute on opportunities to improve your team’s operations.

- Successful candidates for this position will have a background in Java or C++. Equally important to these specific skills is a candidate's ability to multi-task, adapt quickly to new development environments and changing business requirements, learn new systems, gain new skills, create reliable & maintainable code, and find creative, scalable solutions to difficult problems.
- The ability to communicate clearly and concisely both written and orally is a key competency as is demonstrable skill as a self-starter.

About the team
Our team owns the customer purchase experience for a-la-carte e Books and Kindle Unlimited subscription and related business metrics (e.g., Purchase Success Rate) across all surfaces (Small, Medium, Large and Kindle E-readers) globally. Purchase experience is a holistic view of all Books customer interactions in their journey between intent to buy or subscribe through receipt of their digital product. We enable simplified purchasing CX, new payment methods and products, expand access to new customers and protect customer trust by meeting all regulatory and compliance demands. Our vision is to enable a zero-friction purchase experience, offering all payment methods for Books customers worldwide on any surface
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 3+ years of computer science fundamentals (object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm design, problem solving and complexity analysis) experience
- 2+ years of server-side development experience
- 3+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
