About the Role

Airbus Operations is looking for a Working Student in Structure Design & Manufacturing (d/f/m) to support the ZEROe Research & Technology (RnT) department. As a working student, you will work approximately 18 hours per week while pursuing your studies and gain hands-on experience as a Composite Design Engineer.

Location: Hamburg (Finkenwerder/ZAL)
Start: as soon as possible
Duration: 12 months
Salary: At least €18.53 per hour (collectively agreed), plus special payments such as vacation pay

About Working Students

Working students are students enrolled at a University or other institution of higher education employed in a reasonably long, fixed-term position parallel to their studies. This position must not be confused with an internship or with the possibility of writing a final thesis. During term-time, working students are not allowed to work more than 20 hours per week. A final thesis is possible after consultation with the department.

Your Location

You will be working at Finkenwerder/The Innovation Hub, the largest production site for civil aircraft in Hamburg, situated on the southern banks of the river Elbe with the option to commute by ferry. The ZAL Tech Center (Zentrum für Angewandte Luftfahrtforschung) in Hamburg-Finkenwerder is one of the most modern research centers for civil aviation worldwide, where you will work in a dynamic, start-up-like environment.

Commute Options:

  • Ferry from Teufelsbrück to the Airbus ferry terminal, then commute to university in the morning and at noon
  • Ferry to Finkenwerder, then bike for approximately 15 minutes to the main entrance
  • Ferry from Teufelsbrück/Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder ferry terminal, then bike or short bus ride to ZAL Tech Center

Your Tasks and Responsibilities

As an integral part of the ZEROe RnT team, you will act as a design engineer with a hands-on approach, accompanying the lifecycle of a part from the screen to the test bench.

  • Design: Develop and design innovative ideas for CFRP structures contributing to the hydrogen aircraft architecture
  • 3D Modeling (CAD): Use 3DEXPERIENCE to create detailed 3D models and assemblies
  • Structural Analysis (FEM): Support the pre-sizing of components and perform initial FEM calculations to validate designs regarding weight and strength
  • Prototyping & Manufacturing: Help build the parts you design and work closely with Manufacturing Engineering colleagues in Stade to manufacture and assemble concepts in the workshop
  • Collaboration: Exchange between design, stress, and the manufacturing shop floor to ensure that what is designed can actually be built

Desired Skills and Qualifications

Education:

  • Enrolled student in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a comparable technical degree

CAD Skills:

  • Basic to advanced knowledge in 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX) / Catia V5 is highly desired
  • If proficient in other CAD tools, a strong motivation to learn 3DX quickly is required

Simulation Skills:

  • Basic understanding of FEM (Finite Element Method) and pre-sizing principles is preferred
  • Motivation to deepen your knowledge in this area is key

Technical Knowledge:

  • Understanding of composite materials (CFRP) and mechanical design principles

Mindset:

  • "Hands-on" mentality with enjoyment of tinkering and building things physically, not just designing them digitally

Language:

  • Fluent in English
  • German is a strong plus (especially for communication in the workshop) but not a must

Your Benefits

  • Attractive salary and work-life balance with an 18-hour week (flexitime)
  • Innovative Environment: Work in the ZAL, a hub specifically designed for R&D and collaboration
  • Mobile working after agreement with the department
  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally
  • Work with modern/diversified technologies
  • Close contact with interfaces and participation in weekly team meetings
  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network

Application Documents

Please upload the following documents:

  • Cover letter
  • CV
