The Opportunity:
The Mechanical Engineer I role works on site daily out of our San Diego, CA location in the **Infectious Diseases **Business Unit in **Abbott Rapid Diagnostics. **We’re empowering smarter medical and economic decision-making to help transform the way people manage their health at all stages of life. Every day, more than 10 million tests are run on Abbott’s diagnostics instruments, providing lab results for millions of people.
What You’ll Work On
The person hired in this role will use multidisciplinary engineering knowledge to contribute to a team designing and developing innovative medical devices or components/subsystems in support of company's strategic plan.
In addition:

Design parts to meet specific design goals.

Use empirical and experimental analysis to evaluate designs.
-
Involved in test method and model development.
-
Identify potential issues with designs.
-
Work with internal departments and outside vendors to obtain prototype parts.
-
Support invention disclosures.
-
Support pre-clinical and clinical testing of devices.
-
Support design reviews and physician visits.
-
Plan, coordinate, and execute activity in support of project goals.
-
Gain an understanding of the developing clinical environment (i.e. current treatment methods, evolving clinical needs etc.).
-
Gain an understanding of the quality and regulatory requirements of division, FDA and ISO regulations.
-
Independently manage time and completion of assigned tasks.
-
Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
-
Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
Required Qualifications
-
Associate's degree or technical degree with 5 or more years of experience in similar field or bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering.

0-3 years of experience designing and testing medical devices preferred. Exposure to a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability preferred. Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment. Solid Works or other CAD experience required.

Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects. Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.

Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment. Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment. Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects. Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.

The base pay for this position is
$73,900.00 – $116,000.00
