The Opportunity

This position works out of our Costa Rica – Alajuela location in the EP Division. In Abbott’s Electrophysiology (EP) business, we’re advancing the treatment of heart disease through breakthrough medical technologies in atrial fibrillation, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives.

As the EHS Spcecialist IV, you will resolve all legal diligences with local authorities related to representation, importation, storage, transportation, control, preparation and mixing, packing, repacking, supply and handling inspection of chemicals and materials in the facility.

Proposing and monitoring policies and procedures to ensure that the company meets and complies with all regulations related to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).

Assures appropriate corrective action is taken where health and environmental hazards exist. Conducts training of employees and contractors in hazardous materials handling, environmental regulations, industrial hygiene, chemistry compatibilities, etc.

Management of ALL EHS technical and managerial standards related to risk assessment, compliance, environmental programs and industrial hygiene.

What You’ll Do

  • Assure compliance of Abbott EPHF/SH Costa Rica with environment / chemicals regulations defined by local government authorities, through periodically reports and on-site inspections.
  • Develop procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable local and international EHS laws through knowledge of appropriate regulations.
  • Complete the quarterly and yearly environmental metric report to corporate.
  • Inspect plant facilities to identify potential hazards or legal findings, analyzing operating records and reports, documenting all inquiries regarding safety, environmental or industrial hygiene issues, implementing corrective action where necessary, and ensuring that established procedures are followed correctly through permits assignments.
  • Provide and maintains documentation for training and certification (where applicable) in chemistry and environment regulations, procedures, and compliance requirements to personnel that deal with specific environmental responsibilities (e.g., chemicals, air, water, solid wastes, emergency attention).
  • Work with engineering staff to identify and evaluate potential manufacturing problems, suggestions for waste reduction, or deviations in (EHS) policies and make recommendations for corrections.
  • Be the business partner for operations in the implementation and sustaining of EHS programs to reduce workplace injuries/illnesses and environmental impacts.
  • Drive social responsibility programs to improve engagement and participation of employees, help achieve plant of the year and improve environmental metrics.
  • Execute safety, health and environmental risk assessment, and support the team in developing risk control measures.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor´s degree in EHS.
  • 4+ years’ experience in Environmental Management Systems; EHS Regulatory Compliance and ISO 14001
  • Computer skills. Use PowerPoint, Excel spreadsheets, and/or Microsoft Project.
  • Fully bilingual English / Spanish.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ISO 14001 Auditor Certificate
  • Incorporated at SETENA as an Environmental Regent
  • Incorporated at the Colegio de Químicos e Ingenieros Químicos de Costa Rica as a Chemical Regent
