Your Role and Responsibilities:
This role offers a fantastic opportunity to gain a central part in shaping future architectures of ABB’s
industrial communication products and solutions. The position is based at ABB Corporate Research Center
in Västerås, where cutting-edge research meets real industrial impact.
You will belong to a highly motivated, international research team and create next generation industrial
communication systems, while collaborating with researchers, technology and product managers, system
architects, and industrial partners. ABB offers an inspiring work environment with excellent opportunities

Your Responsibilities:
- Initiate, lead, and participate in research projects focused on innovative industrial communication solutions.
- Design, implement, analyze, and evaluate communication network architectures for automation, industrial control, and monitoring.
- Validate ideas and concepts through prototypes and experimental pilots with a clear business relevance.
- Disseminate results through technical reports, patent applications, and scientific publications.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate research results into deployable and impactful solutions.
- Build a professional network of internal and external contacts to actively share and acquire new knowledge across the organization.

Qualifications for the role
- You hold an M.Sc. or PhD. degree in Communication Engineering, Software Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- Good knowledge and hands-on experience with Ethernet-based technologies for industrial communication, such as PROFINET, EtherCAT, TSN, OPC UA, and understanding of its real-time and reliability requirements.
- Knowledge of wireless technologies (e.g., 5G, Wi-Fi), network redundancy, and Quality of Service (QoS).
- Knowledge of IoT connectivity technologies (e.g., LTE-M, NB-IoT, BLE, NFC), communication protocols (e.g., MQTT, LwM2M), and cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS).
- Understanding of time synchronization principles and protocols, such as NTP and PTP.
- You are curious, analytical, and motivated to work in a research-driven environment.
- You enjoy collaborating across disciplines and explaining complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Considered as a plus: hands-on prototyping skills regarding software (e.g., C, C++, Python, MATLAB, RTOS) and hardware (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Arduino), as well as experience with laboratory instruments.

The research team’s focus is on industrial networks and communication systems, belonging to the Automation Technology Department.
